"Turn around and only an afterimage remains withal." - Tite Kubo[1]

Soifon (砕蜂, Suìfēng in the Pinyin transliteration of Mandarin Chinese, often incorrectly romanized as Soi Fong) is the Commander-in-chief of the Onmitsukidō and the captain of the 2nd Division in the Gotei 13. Her lieutenant in the latter unit is Marechiyo Ōmaeda.

Appearance

A relatively short and petite woman with tanned-skin and black hair. Underneath her standard Shinigami captain's uniform, Soifon wears the uniform of the Commander-in-chief of the Onmitsukidō, which has no sleeves or covering for the back. Her hair is worn short with two long braids covered in cloth. Prior to Yoruichi's defection, Soifon's hair was shoulder-length and had a softer look to it (perhaps relating to her change in personality). Instead of wearing the standard Shinigami sandals with tabi, she wears traditional Chinese shoes with ordinary white socks.

Personality

Soifon is staunchly loyal, firm, and unbending in her beliefs. She is a hard worker and takes a strong moral stand — she particularly believes in following orders. She is generally reserved and truly not arrogant in any manner like her lieutenant. She will not hesitate in the slightest to strike down even her subordinates if they stand in her way. She chooses to ignore all her subordinates, including her lieutenant Omaeda, believing that personal struggle builds character. Soifon, like most female Shinigami, is a member of the Shinigami Women's Association, and appears to be the only one of captain rank within the organization (assuming Retsu Unohana is not a member).

Soifon likes fish, but dislikes meat.[1] She often spends her free time dreaming about the days when she and Yoruichi fought together and practiced Shunpō.[1] In a Valentine's Day omake, she even tried to give her a heart shaped box of chocolates with little success and she seems to love anything that resembles a black cat, which is Yoruichi's alternate form, and she has a large collection of black cat shaped merchandise. It is also known that since Yoruichi's reappearance, she began to collect cat accessories and had the 2nd Division quarters installed with floor-heating (the expenses were covered by her lieutenant).[1] Soifon once seems to be affectionately admiring pictures of Yoruichi[2]. Later, as part of the photo collecting project of the Shinigami Woman's Association she attempts to take nude photos of Yoruichi while she is distracted but fails miserably.[3] During a meeting of the Shinigami Women's Association she requested to have a cellphone in the shape of a black cat's head with a bee body (the cat representing Yoruichi and the bee representing herself) that would allow her to talk to Yoruichi as much as she wants,[4] and in another meeting when discussing ideas for a Shinigami video game Soifon requested a game with her and Yoruichi as the protagonists, both requests were denied however. Soifon's name means broken (or rather, to break) bee; it is noted that the name of her Zanpakutō, Suzumebachi, means hornet.

History

Soifon as Yoruichi's bodyguard 100 years ago.

Soifon was born Shaolin Fon (蜂 梢綾, Fon Shaolin in the Pinyin transliteration of Mandarin Chinese) into the Fon house, one of the lower noble houses affiliated with the Shihōin noble house. The Fon house traditionally serves the Shihōin house by joining the Onmitsukidō. Any member who does not pass the test to get into the Onmitsukidō is immediately exiled from the family. Because of this, Shaolin has felt a lot of pressure to succeed since her youth. Though Shaolin and her five older brothers all got into the Onmitsukidō, her first two brothers died on their first missions, her next two brothers died on their second missions, and her last brother died on his sixth mission. Upon her joining the Onmitsukidō, she adopted her grandmother's codename: Soifon. In the anime, she did not adopt the name voluntarily — a family member gave her the name.

Soifon worked hard and was eventually promoted to become the head of the guard for the leader of the Onmitsukidō at the time, Yoruichi Shihōin. Yoruichi took the young Soifon under her wing as her protégé, and they developed a close relationship. 110 years ago, Soifon, in her capacity as a head of the guard, was highly protective of Yoruichi and her honor. She had a short temper when it came to Kisuke Urahara, she saw his carefree attitude as him being lazy and bad at his job. She is proven wrong when she finds that his carefree style attributed to the way he did his job in his position as head of the detention unit.

When Yoruichi eventually left Soul Society to help her exiled friend Kisuke Urahara, she abandoned all of her titles. Soifon felt betrayed by Yoruichi's abandonment and the circumstances surrounding them. As a result, she trained herself in order to surpass Yoruichi and take the titles she abandoned. She ultimately unified the Onmitsukidō as well as the Punishment Force after Yoruichi disappeared.[5]

Synopsis

Soul Society Arc

Soifon meets her former teacher

During the Soul Society Arc, she was presented with that chance, battling Yoruichi intensly as combat at the execution grounds began. There, she proved to be Yoruichi's equal in unarmed combat, and used her Shikai in order to tip the scales in her favor. As this plan did not work out, due to her opponent's strong survival skills allowing her to avoid the instant death, Soifon declared that she would win with the new technique she had created, known as Shunko. Much to her dismay, she discovered that Yoruichi had discovered this ability before her, and that even she had yet to master it, but was able to defeat her with a single attack from it.

The pair reconciled their differences, placing Soifon back where she belonged; at the side of her ex-commander. There, the two women briefly captured Sōsuke Aizen, being the first shinigamis to arrive at the scene, with Yoruichi blocking his zanpakutō while Soifon herself holds her zanpakutō to his neck threatening to kill him if he moves. However before they are able to detain Aizen, Yoruichi suddenly calls for Soifon to move as Aizen, Gin and Tōsen is rescued by an army of Gillian.

Bount Arc

She would appear again assisting Yoruichi during the time of the Bount Feud, making first contact with them, and reporting it back to Soul Society while Shihōin relayed it to Urahara and Ichigo.[6] When the Bounts infiltrate Soul Society she encounters Mabashi and when she tries to apprehend him is attacked by one of her own men. Mabashi would use his doll's powers to control her subordinates, poisoning her.[7] Soifon is nearly beaten by Mabashi and when he closes in to finish her she is able to land a second hit from her Suzumebachi thus killing the later and freeing her men from his control.[8]

The New Captain Shusūke Amagai arc

Soifon is only briefly seen at the beginning of the arc during Shūsuke Amagai's introduction.[9] When Ichigo travels to Soul Society to rescue Rurichiyo Kasumiōji she is charged of making sure that nothing interrupts the wedding.[10] When Ichigo arrives to stop the wedding, she crosses swords with Rukia Kuchiki. After disposing of the latter she takes on Ichigo and easily dominates the battle due to Ichigo's recent injury from Rurichiyo's impersonator.[11] When her and Amagai's divisions are tasked with finding Ichigo and Rukia, she leaves lieutenant Ōmaeda in charge and joins Yoruichi in her mission when she reveals the truth about the Bakkōtō.[12] When the Shinigami leveled the Kasumiōji Compound towards the end of the arc, she is seen taking care of the Bakkōtō factory.

Fake Karakura arc

Soifon fighting Ggio Vega

Soifon along with her lieutenant and the rest of the of the Gotei 13 Captains not currently in Hueco Mundo are seen waiting for Aizen's arrival. When Omaeda states that he thought Yumichika Ayasegawa, Ikkaku Madarame, Izuru Kira and Shūhei Hisagi where not going to be there (they are charged with protecting the four pillars), she states that she had told him, although later thinks to herself that she might have forgotten.

After the pillars that keep the real Karakura Town in Soul Society are successfully defended and four of Barragan Luisenbarn's Fracción are killed, she begins battle with one of Barragan's remaining Fracción, Ggio Vega. Binding the Arrancar down with a Kidō, she releases Suzumebachi confident in victory. The fracción manages to escape and releases his zanpakutō, and seemingly defeats her when her lieutenant, Marechiyo Ōmaeda, attempted to intervene. When Ōmaeda grabs him to give his captain a shot, Ggio prepares to kill him with a Cero. Soifon easily repels Vega before he can harm her lieutenant, claiming that she wanted to test the Arrancar's abilities. She then finishes him off by using Suzumebachi on him. Although it appears as if she struck two different areas (the front and back), in reality she used Suzumebachi's ability on his right lung, and killed him. Strangely enough, Soifon didn't seem too happy about killing Vega.

After the fight with Ggio is finished, his master Barragan finally rises from his throne, ready to engage Soifon and Omaeda in battle. As her battle with Barragan continues, she is seen having a difficulty in fighting him, and yet she is fighting with her full strength, with Barragan saying "This is ridiculous... You can't even budge me.".[13]Disappointed after knowing that the enemies he's fighting were at full strength, Barragan draws out his zanpakutō from his throne to end the battle.

Despite Soifon's proficiency at Flash Step and hand-to-hand combat, Barragan's power as the Second Espada to momentarily age targets dulls her might enough for Barragan to brush off her attacks. Soifon then learns from Barragan the aspects of death that each Espada represent, Barragan himself representing Old Age, or Time, which explains his power of slowing/accelerating time itself. He then uses Sonido to appear by her side and lays his hand on her shoulder, provoking her to leap away only to realize he's aged the bones of her arm so much they have broken. Eventually, Barragan decides to unleash his true form.

Soifon's severed rotten arm.

Soifon discovers just how terrifying Barragan's power really is as the building he stood on aged and rusted into nothingness. The Espada then unleashes his horrifying Death Breath, which inflicts her even as she is running away, her arm quickly rotting away to the bone. In a panic of dying, she demands Omaeda to cut her arm off to stop the affliction from spreading further. She is then taunted by Barragan who finds it comical that a Shingami is afraid of death.

Powers & Abilities

Soifon's Battle Data. Top: Offense, Top Right: Defense, Bottom right: Agility, Bottom: Kidō, Bottom Left: Intelligence, Top Left: Physical Strength Total:460 [14]

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: As the leader of the Onmitsukidō she is required to be highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat, which she had been training in ever since she first join the Onmitsukidō. She is most likely the most proficient in all Soul Society being second only to her mentor Yoruichi Shihōin. She can sufficiently block and attack others and is hard to actively lay a hand on unless she allows it.

Flash Steps Master: As the leader of the Onmitsukidō she is also required to be highly proficient in Flash Steps. She has been shown to almost keep up with her mentor Yoruichi Shihōin, being able to hit her once with the Nigeki Kessatsu, but not getting a chance to do so again as Yoruichi was faster.

Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Soifon is masterful in swordsmanship, commonly only employing her Zanpakutō when she faces a opponent with a drawn weapon. She is unique in that her fighting style is entirely different then traditional styles. Soifon holds the blade horizontally with the blade alongside the arm in a reverse grip, using the blade like a large dagger with the blade pointed backwards towards the bottom of her gripping hand. All strikes are made by sweeping the arm forward as though throwing a punch while whipping the blade forward away from the arm quickly in a broad arc. She is quite adept at blocking with the blade in this manner as well.

Master Assassin: As the Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō Soifon is is one of the foremost masters of the art of assassination. She is known to be masterful skill art of staying hidden and unseen. When necessary she can effectively exploit having a advantage against an opponent or hiding her presence. Using Flash Steps she has disabled opponents the without them being able to see her, as she did while catching the arrows of one of the Dark Old Ones in battle. She also used the ability to sneak up on Aizen and capture him before he escaped to Hueco Mundo.

Master Strategist & Tactician: As commander of the Secret Mobile Corps, Soifon has shown herself to be a capable leader. Repeatedly through the series, Soifon has shown to be insightful and crafty, quickly capable of understanding any situation that presents itself and adjust to it effectively. Soifon has shown an innate skill to determine what actions should be taken in battle. The tactics she employs are based on subterfuge and confusion. She has shown to be adept in putting her opponents into a false sense of security and allowing them to underestimate her abilities.

Great Spiritual Power: As the Captain of the Second Division, she boasts a great amount of spiritual energy.

Kidō Expert: As Captain of the 2nd Division and the Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō Soifon is well versed in art of Kidō. Though she commonly employs Shunpo and hand-to-hand fighting techniques. She is experienced enough that she is able to mix it with other hand-to-hand combat techniques.

Enhanced Strength: Soifon is strong enough to take on bigger opponents despite her smaller stature. Easily overcoming those four times her size.

Soifon's incomplete Shunkō

Shunkō (瞬閧, Flash Cry): An advanced technique that combines hand-to-hand combat and Kidō. She fights by surrounding her back and arms with pressurized Kidō. The keisen uniform has no back or sleeves because they will rip apart when the technique is activated. What is known of it so far is that it can allow her to instantly neutralize an opponent's movement. Soifon's version of the technique is new to her and incomplete, its use of compressed Kidō is not visibly seen.[15]

Zanpakutō

Suzumebachi (雀蜂, Hornet): In its sealed form, it resembles a wakizashi with a yellow hilt reminiscent of a Chinese dao. It is kept sheathed horizontally behind Soifon's lower back hanging by a rope.

Soifon with Suzumebachi released
  • Shikai: triggered by the command "Sting all Enemies to Death!" (尽敵螫殺, Jinteki Shakusetsu; Viz: "Spider enemy's killing strike")[16]. In its Shikai, Suzumebachi changes drastically in appearance and ability. When transformed, Suzumbachi takes the form of a glove that fits to Soifon’s right hand, with a chain attaching the “stinger” to the top of the glove. With a cone-like shape, the “stinger” sits on Soifon’s middle finger, extending at a length about twice as far as the normal extension of the finger, allowing Soifon’s striking distance to increase slightly. Ornately decorated in gold and black, the Zanpakutō is fitting of the name, as the pattern and shapes resemble that of a hornet.[17]
Soifon explaining the mechanics behind Ggio Vega's death.
Shikai Special Ability: Totally integrated into her natural abilities with Flash Steps, Suzumbachi’s abilities indeed prove deadly.
  • Death in Two Steps (Nigeki Kessatsu)As its first step, Soifon stabs her enemy with Suzumbachi’s blade. Not only leaving a rather deep wound, the attack leaves a stamp on the user’s body. Spreading from the center of wound, known as Hornet's Crest (蜂紋華, hōmonka), this stamp becomes the target of Soifon’s second attack. If struck in this same spot that was hit the first time, the person will inevitably die and thus illustrate "Death in Two Steps." The crests are maintained by Soifon's will and are impossible to remove unless she wills it; when Yoruichi was still running the Onmitsukidō, Soifon could only maintain the crests for half an hour.
Soifon explains in a filler that Suzumebachi's ability is caused by a type of venom it secretes, which acts as a handy counter-poison as well but this has not been confirmed in the manga. The effect of the poisons reaction time takes slightly longer for those who have enhanced power. It has been shown that the mechanics behind the ability is not based on being hit on the same spot on the skin, but rather when Suzumebachi pierces the exact same spot internally from any side of the body. This shows that Suzumebachi's ability takes effect not through point of entry but rather point of actual surface contact.[18]

Trivia

  • The Bount arc also marks the first time she is seen killing someone with Suzumebachi. The Bount Mabashi manages to survive for slightly longer than two minutes when stabbed the second time, which can be attributed to Mabashi's enhanced power due to the large number of spirit particles in Soul Society. In contrast, Suzumebachi's second hit is instantly fatal to Benin, in the movie Bleach: Memories of Nobody, where said Dark One seemingly vaporizes into thin air. She uses this ability for the first time in the manga on Ggio Vega, one of the Fracción of Barragan Luisenbarn. Ggio was killed not by being hit on the same spot on his skin, but rather when Suzumebachi pierced the exact same spot on his right lung from both sides of his body (through his chest and back). She claims that this is her "best move" since it appears as though she hits two completely different areas on the targets body; even her Lieutenant is confused as to why Ggio died from the attack.
  • Soifon is the first Captain to lose an arm whereas Yammy was the first Espada to lose an arm, albeit it being re-attached. Even so, if Soifon lives through her battle and meets Orihime, her arm can be restored.

Quotes

  • "Jinteki Shakusetsu, Suzumebachi."
  • "Flash Master Yoruichi... That's not a real title. But since you claim it, you leave me no choice... but to rip it from you with my own bare hands!"
  • "Think back some more now. Try to remember... and don't hold back. Compare us. Between you and me, which of us shines... as the greater warrior?!"
  • "Showing your back to the enemy and running away isn't much of a strategy, is it? I suppose you're running to buy yourself time, but it's useless! Wanna know why? Before it was perfected, my Homonka used to disappear after a while, but now it lasts forever!"

Retsu Unohana (卯ノ花 烈, Unohana Retsu) is the Captain of the Fourth Division in the Gotei 13. She is one of the oldest and most experienced captains, and is noted to be a very skilled healer.

Appearance

Retsu Unohana

Captain Unohana is considered to be one of, if not the most beautiful female in Soul Society, having a large amount of male admirers. She wears the standard shinigami captain uniform apart from using an obi instead of the normal sash. Her hair is long and is always worn as a large braid in front. Over 100 years ago, she didn't have the large braid.

Personality

Unohana has a gentle and warm personality that augments her appearance. Unohana is a soft-spoken, polite, and caring woman who uses honorifics when addressing everyone, including her subordinates and the enemy. She rarely shows any signs of panic or distress, and has a great sense of duty, shown in the times that she orders Hanatarō Yamada’s imprisonment and Isane Kotetsu’s chasing of Renji Abarai when he runs away with Rukia Kuchiki. With her grace and kind manners, she lets others know quietly that while she may be soft, she is not to be taken lightly. Despite her gentle nature, several members of the Eleventh Division and even her fellow Captains fear her.

Also according to the former captains of the 5th and 7th Division, respectively, she can be very frightening as the look on their faces implied they would never want to get on her bad side (they noted that being destroyed by Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai's Bankai would be a preferable fate).

No one has ever disputed this fact, for she is an indispensable part of Soul Society and the Gotei 13 Squads.

Unohana likes strong flavored food, preferring it to bland tasting dishes. In her free time, she climbs mountains throughout Rukongai, during these excursions, she collects medicinal herbs. Once a month, she holds an ikebana class for the members of her division. Unohana is also the representative or even President of the Flower Arranging Society.

History

Although not much is revealed about her past, it is said that she has been a captain for at least 200 years; along with fellow captains Ukitake and Kyoraku. This makes her one of the oldest captains among the Gotei 13, despite her rather youthful appearance. At least 110 years ago, her lieutenant was Seinosuke Yamada, possibly a relative of the current 7th seat Hanatarō Yamada. It is vaguely hinted by Ukitake that she may be the second eldest captain, since he refers to her as Senpai (which translates to either "senior" or "elder").

Synopsis

Soul Society Arc

Retsu Unohana first appears during the captain's emergency meeting called by General Yamamoto. However she says nothing at this time, and remains silent throughout the constant bickering between her fellow officers. She is next seen after Sōsuke Aizen's apparent death, in which she confirms to Sajin Komamura and Kaname Tosen that he is truly dead, and appears shortly afterwards when Hanatarō Yamada is "caught" by Jūshirō Ukitake and brought before Unohana for judgment. Despite the reasons put forth by Ukitake, she determines that Hanatarō must be imprisoned on account of the fact that he is a seated officer in her division and may have incidentally aided in the harm that the Ryoka had supposedly done within the Seireitei.

As head of the medical relief division, Retsu Unohana’s healing prowess is legendary. This is first shown when she manages to heal Renji Abarai after his defeat at the hands of Byakuya Kuchiki. She manages to save Renji from certain death, while also delaying her arrival at the Sōkyoku Stand for Rukia Kuchiki’s execution. While attending the execution, Isane Kotetsu expresses open regret that Yamamoto lied to Rukia regarding the release of the Ryoka, but Unohana explain to her lieutenant that despite the harshness of such a lie, it also allows Rukia to die peacefully with the idea that her friends' lives would be spared.

After Ichigo Kurosaki arrives on the scene, destroying of the Sōkyoku stand and starting his battle with Byakuya Kuchiki, the respective captains then head off to their own battles amidst the chaos. Unohana releases Minazuki, even though the actual process is not shown, and saves all those hurt during the initial battle. She keeps Isane with her on top of Minazuki while her Zanpakutō heals the rest of her patients inside of its stomach. Arriving at the Relief Station, Unohana asks Minazuki to release everyone, and seals it back while calling for her surbordinates to tend to the injured personnel for the time being. She then asks Isane to follow her to the Central 46 Chambers.

They arrive at the scene in time to see Aizen defeat Tōshirō Hitsugaya. Captain Unohana announces her presence to the traitors while citing her own suspicions surrounding Aizen's staged death. She also goes on to claim that the Offices of Central 46 Chambers was the only place he could hide and mentions the use of an elaborate corpse doll on his part. Aizen then points out the mistakes in her analysis, while also commending her for seeing through his deception. The first was that he was not here to hide, and the second was immediately shown as he releases his Zanpakutō in front of Unohana and explains Kyōka Suigetsu's Complete Hypnosis. He then proceeds to tell Unohana about the third member of his group, Kaname Tosen. He and Gin Ichimaru then teleport to Soukyoku Hill, leaving them behind. Unohana immediately requests Isane to find out his exact location, while informing everyone of Aizen’s betrayal, including the ryoka. She then takes steps to save Hitsugaya and Momo Hinamori, both of whom were fatally injured by Aizen before her arrival.

After ensuring that both would escape death for the moment, she leaves them in the care of Isane and travels via Minazuki to the Soukyoku stand, where she tells Yasochika Iemura, the 3rd Seat of her division, that the Ryoka do not require help. She then settles down beside Byakuya Kuchiki and gently scolds him, saying that he has pushed himself too hard. She then calls Rukia over upon Byakuya’s request, during which he reveals his reason for allowing her execution.

A week after Aizen's insurgency, Unohana stops two Squad 11 members from creating a ruckus at the 4th Division’s Relief Station, and unsuccessfully tries to convince Hitsugaya to speak to an unconscious Momo, who is still recovering from her injuries.

Hueco Mundo Arc

Unohana and Isane appeared alongside captains Kenpachi Zaraki, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and Byakuya Kuchiki in Las Noches after the titanic battle between Ichigo and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. Her initial appearance effectively stops the approaching Exequias from doing further harm to Yasutora Sado, in which the leader of the group calmly orders a retreat. She then stops Isane from pursuing them, claiming that they are only there to heal the injured. She proceeds to heal Yasutora Sado and Gantenbainne Mosqueda.

Powers & Abilities

Unohana's Battle Data. Top: Offense, Top Right: Defense, Bottom right: Agility, Bottom: Kidō, Bottom Left: Intelligence, Top Left: Physical Strength Total:540
Master Healer: Unohana is by far the most knowledgeable on health related matters in all of Soul Society. She is known to be highly proficient in conventional healing techniques as well as herbal healing. Her knowledge of anatomy is high enough that upon examination of Aizen's "dead body", she concluded it was not Aizen or even real. She also seems to be able to heal more than just Shinigami, evident when she heals Yasutora Sado, a human, and Gantenbainne Mosqueda, an Arrancar.

Kidō Master: As the head of the Fourth Division, Unohana is known for her skills in the healing branch of Kidō.

Immense Spiritual Power: As one of the oldest Captains in the Gotei 13, it is safe to assume that Unohana has tremendous spiritual power.

Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Although she has never been seen in battle, it is known that her personal specialty is sword fighting, including her particular mastery in the kendō style of fighting.[1]

Flash Steps Expert: Unohana is proficient enough in this skill to be of the average level of speed possessed by a Captain.

Keen Intellect: Along with her general skill of healing. She is able to detect the smallest details, this helps her in her mastery of healing. Being able to detect anomalies and problems lesser healers wouldn't. She can tell by a simple look what type of medical attention if any is needed. She was able to deduce that Aizen's elaborate illusion of a corpse doll wasn't real, but even more so that Aizen was perpetuating a much larger scheme.

Zanpakutō

Minazuki (肉雫唼; "Purify the Flesh"): In sealed form, Minazuki is slightly longer than an ordinary katana, and resembles a nodachi The guard has an oval shape and the handle is red. Instead of tying it to her obi, Unohana carries her Zanpakutō over her shoulder by a rope strap or lets Isane carry it for her.

Retsu Unohana and her lieutenant Isane Kotetsu riding Minazuki in its Shikai state
  • Shikai: Its release command is unknown. When released in shikai form, Minazuki will start to morph, turning into a green like gas substance before taking a solid shape of a giant, green, one eyed Manta Ray like creature with the capability to fly. Minazuki can act as transportation and will change back into the green gas substance before returning to it's Sword form when it's duty has been forfilled.
Shikai Special Ability: It is large enough to transport many people on its back (at least a dozen, based on its size when compared to those riding it). It seems to act on verbal orders and when landing it has the abillity to somehow create a pair of bird like legs. Minazuki's main strong aspect is it's ability to heal. When the wounded are placed within Minazuki's mouth, they are swallowed and stored inside it's stomach. Minazuki's stomach acids are strong healing medicines and ointments which gradually soak over the wounded, curing their injuries. Currently it has shown to be able to carry at least five people within it's stomach. When Retsu gives the word, Minazuki will vomit the people back out it's mouth.

Trivia

  • Many fans assume that she is the weakest captain, but this is likely false as she has yet to be shown in battle, revealing her true power. She is also one of the oldest captains in the Gotei 13, which would further suggest this assumption to be wrong. Plus, according to the official Character Book, Unohana totalize the third highest "stat points" (540/600), just behind Sōsuke Aizen and Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai (560/600 each) .
  • It seems that Captain Unohana like candies, since in one of the Omake chapters Unohana asks Hanatarō Yamada (who had gone to the real world) if he had brought large quantities of candies, putting aside her quiet and serene appearance. Her lieutenant Isane Kotetsu show a face of disapproval.
  • Her Zanpakutō, Minazuki, is one of the only Zanpakutō's with a healing ability, along with Hanatarō's Hisagomaru.

Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryusai

Considered to be the strongest captain in the Gotei 13, Yamamoto is depicted as an old man with a very long beard, and long eyebrows. There are many scars on his torso and head, the most seen is a star-shaped one above his right eye, suggesting numerous battles in his past. He wears the standard Shinigami uniform, but its size is greatly exaggerated. He also drapes his haori over his back instead of actually wearing it.

Despite his old age and frail appearance, he has a very muscular body, something he only reveals when he takes a curtain battle stance, something Shunsui claims is not seen so often.

Personality

As the general of Gotei 13, Yamamoto is highly respected by most of the Shinigami, most notably Sajin Komamura, who views Yamamoto as a benefactor who saved his life. The embodiment of conviction, Yamamoto follows the laws and regulations of Soul Society to the letter, and expects the same of others. He is not a man to tolerate insubordination, and is vocal with those who attempt to be such a way. He is quick to anger in the face of possible betrayal, and appears rather ruthless in combat. When in a state of peace, he carries himself with an air of frailty, even to the point where he has fallen asleep standing while awaiting Shunsui Kyōraku's arrival for a meeting. He considers Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake like his sons. Kyōraku calls him Yamamoto "-jii-san" or "Yama-jii" (Old-Man Yama in the English Dub), while Ukitake calls him "Genryuusai-sensei". In the Shūsuke Amagai arc, it has been shown that Ichigo calls him "Gramps". Yamamoto appreciates Eastern cultures and is a master at tea ceremony, but subsequently dislikes "Western" traditions as preferred by his lieutenant Chōjirō Sasakibe.[1]He could be in the Royal Guard but no one would be able to replace him.

Yamamoto holds a tea session every month in the 1st Division quarters for every member of the division. It is known that he plaits his own beard and arranges its ends once a month. He also likes to be rubbed down with a dry towel while exposed to the sun on his balcony.[1]

History

General Yamamoto founded the Shinigami Academy about 2000 years before the main Bleach storyline. Yamamoto was himself a teacher at this academy, and personally instructed Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake. He admits to being rather proud of the two. When they became captains, he boasted about them as though they were his own sons.

Synopsis

Soul Society arc

Yamamoto is first seen during a meeting between captains over their fellow captain Gin Ichimaru's failure to kill Ichigo Kurosaki, and dismisses the meeting after Kenpachi Zaraki leaves. After Renji Abarai's defeat to Ichigo, Yamamoto has the chamber of the Central 46 locked up for their own protection. After Kyōraku and Ukitake stop Rukia Kuchiki's execution, Yamamoto follows the two and has a short battle with them and comes out unscratched. After three of the captains are revealed to be traitors, Yamamoto denounces their positions and orders preparations for a war against them to be commenced. The battle suddenly is forced to stop with the announcement of Isane Kotetsu on the true intentions of Sōsuke Aizen leading to all of the chaos in Soul Society.

When Aizen's true colors are revealed and the Menos Grande come to his, Gin Ichimaru, and Kaname Tōsen's rescue, Yamamoto warns the other captains about the Negación attack the Menos Grande perform to rescue their fellow Hollows.

Bount arc

Yamamoto plays very little role during the Bount invasion. Yamamoto begins to think that Mayuri Kurotsuchi is betraying the Soul Society and has Byakuya get all information he can about the Bounts. He later holds a meeting with the remaining captains and tells them about the Bounts invading the Rukongai and the Bount's origins.

Arrancar arc

Yamamoto has a small video conversation with Tōshirō Hitsugaya over the Arrancar invasion of Ichigo's hometown, and allows Momo Hinamori to speak with Hitsugaya. Once the conversation begins to revolve around Aizen, Hinamori begs Hitsugaya to rescue Aizen, believing that Gin Ichimaru is manipulating him. Yamamoto cuts their conversation short by knocking Hinamori unconscious with a Kidō, noting it is too soon to speak as such.

Later, when Orihime Inoue is kidnapped, Yamamoto orders Hitsugaya's task force to retreat back to Soul Society in preparation for the war against Aizen, and firmly disapproves the idea of Ichigo and the others going to her rescue, seeing it as a suicide mission, and believing that Orihime willingly betrayed them.

Shūsuke Amagai Arc

Yamamoto presides over Shūsuke Amagai being appointed captain of Squad 3. However, Amagai uses his position to attempt to exact revenge against Yamamoto, believing that he killed his father, Shin'etsu Kisaragi. In reality, Shin'etsu had been given a mission to investigate the Kasumioji clan, but was captured by Gyōkaku Kumoi and used as a test subject for the Bakkōtō. As Shin'etsu was possessed by the Bakkōtō, Yamamoto killed him to end his suffering.

Amagai, after killing Kumoi, attacks Yamamoto, using his Bakkōtō to prevent Yamamoto from using his Zanpakutō. While Yamamoto is defenseless, Ichigo arrives and fights Amagai, but despite Amagai being outmatched and near death, he stabs Yamamoto. After Yoruichi Shihōin and Yamamoto reveal the truth, Amagai kills himself to atone for his crimes.

Fake Karakura Town arc

After Kenpachi kills Nnoitra Jiruga, it is explained that Yamamoto ordered the creation of a replacement Karakura Town so that the captains can fight at full strength without damaging the city. He is then seen with several other captains and lieutenants waiting as Aizen and his forces arrive in Karakura Town. He then unleashes his Shikai to trap the three opposing ex-captains, Aizen, Gin and Tōsen, so as to concentrate on the Espada and their Fracción.

Yamamoto vs. Allon.

It is revealed that Yamamoto has set up four pillars around the fake town that if destroyed will lure the real Karakura town out of Soul Society. Barragan Luisenbarn quickly realises this and sends out his Fracción to obliterate the towers. This plan however, is quickly haulted by Yamamoto's four soldiers, Izuru Kira, Yumichika Ayasegawa, Ikkaku Madarame and Shūhei Hisagi, who have been placed at the pillars to protect them. After the pillars are successfully defended and four of Barragans Fracción are killed, the Espada and remaining Fracción pair up against a Shinigami and begin to battle. Yamamoto announces that the real fights have begun.

Yamamoto taking down Halibel's Fracciòn.

When several of the lieutenants are critically injured against the "pet" of Halibel's Fraccion, Allon, Yamamoto steps in and causes a large hole to appear on the left side of Allon's chest with his cane. Allon then swells to gigantic proportions only to be cut in half by Yamamoto's "Nadegiri", and when Allon's left half returns, he effortlessly incinerates him with his Shikai. Even after Yamamoto kills off Allon, he tells Izuru not to let down the barrier. Just then, Apache, Mila-Rose and Sun-Sun launch a desperate attack from behind even though they are each left with just one arm. However, Yamamoto tajes them down without much difficulty. He later notices that Halibel has set her sights on him to avenge her fallen subordinates. But before they can engage each other, Toshiro Hitsugaya intervenes.

Powers & Abilities

Yamamoto's Battle data. Top: Offense, Top Right: Defense, Bottom right: Agility, Bottom: Kidō, Bottom Left: Intelligence, Top Left: Physical Strength, Total:560
In addition to being regarded as the most powerful of all Shinigami in history, as a former teacher at the academy, he has expert knowledge in all areas of Shinigami combat.

Master Swordsmanship Specialist: As the founder of the Shingami academy along with over a millennium's worth of combat experience, Yamamoto is arguably the most powerful combatant in all of Soul Society. Few have any realistic chance of defeating this man even when outnumbering him. Even fewer would hope to come out alive from that fight. He is capable of fighting two captain-level Shinigami with ease. His skill in swordsmanship has been shown to generally powerful enough to take down his opponent with a single precise strike.

Flash Steps Master: He is also seen to be experienced in the art of Shunpo, being able to outstrip Shunsui and Ukitake in terms of speed during a chase across Seireitei. He is able to easily overtake both captains and arriving at their destination first without even being noticed by the other two captains.

Master Strategist & Tactician: With his years of experience as a teacher and warrior, along with being the commander of the entire Gotei 13, Yamamoto is a very intelligent man. He is capable of quickly adjusting to new developments and making quick decisions accordingly . He has great tactical acumen , as shown from his preparations for the battle in Karakura Town. In the anime, he is shown to be also a very perceptive man, demonstrated from how easily he could tell Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi was hiding knowledge on the Bounts. He did not show any visible surprise from Aizen's betrayal, suggesting he had already seen through Aizen's deceptions. His skill at battle tactics is undeniable, as general he commonly sends the captains and divisions out to engage in battle for over a number of centuries, be it to relatively small or large number of threats. Also, he give commands to his subordinates that may seem harsh or excessive, but often yield fruitful results, because of the rebellious acts that ensue, which he most likely had already calculated.

Immense Spiritual Power: Yamamoto's spiritual power has the same effect as his Zanpakutō, as it is elemental representative of fire. He tends to glow with an fiery aura which has the potential to burn and set his surroundings on fire without the use of his Zanpakutō. Yamamoto possesses an exceedingly powerful Reiatsu, capable of of making other captain level Shinigami of Kyōraku and Ukitake's caliber sweat in fear and paralyze Lieutenant Nanao Ise with a simple look. This later caused her to faint, and she had to be taken a safe distance away, by Kyōraku, from the Captain General simply to regain her ability to breathe.

Enhanced Strength: In addition to his surprising physique for his age, Yamamoto has shown tremendous physical strength as shown from how easily he put a hole into the chest of Allon without much effort at all with his cane and just as easily with a single hand stop one of its punches after enlarging its arm.

Enhanced Endurance: Despite his old age, Yamamoto is capable of fighting for long periods of time even when outnumbered with no visible signs of exhaustion.

Enhanced Durability: During his fight with two of the most powerful captains, Shunsui Kyoraku and Jūshirō Ukitake, he emerged without any sign of injury. He has also shown able to take directed attacks from others without being fazed. He has been seen to even take being impaled on a sword without so much as flinching from the perceived damage.

Kidō Master: Yamamoto's vast knowledge of Kidō is so great that he can perform them without calling out a name, while retaining its great potential power, whereas most users require a name to do so, if not a full incantation.

Master Hand-to-Hand Combat: As a master combatant, Yamamoto has had over a millennium's worth of experience. As with his skill in swordsmanship, he also has skill in hand-to-hand combat, as evident from his ability to effortlessly catch a strike from the deceptively fast Allon. While it is uncertain how much his skill has declined from his advanced age, but he is still a dangerous and highly skilled combatant.

Zanpakutō

Yamamoto's Zanpakutō unveiled

Ryūjin Jakka (流刃若火; "Flowing Flame Blade" or "Flowing Sword, Young Fire"): His Zanpakutō is the most ancient one in Soul Society, as well as being the most powerful fire type, and has greater attack power than all other Zanpakutō in Soul Society. In its sealed form, Ryūjin Jakka usually takes the appearance of a harmless walking staff. At anytime, Yamamoto can instantly remove that disguise, by pealing off the wood, to reveal its true form of a standard katana with a dark purple handle and a circular handguard. Its power is so great that even the strongest of Shinigami are afraid of it even in its sealed form.

Ryūjin Jakka released.
  • Shikai: Its Shikai command is "Reduce All Creation to Ash" (万象一切灰燼と為せ, banshō issai kaijin to nase; "All things in the universe turn to ashes" in the English Dub). The release of his Zanpakutō comes with an extreme release of spiritual pressure affecting all in the area.
Shikai Special Ability: When released, Ryūjin Jakka's blade is engulfed into fire.[3] The aura of this weapon can disintegrate anything that Yamamoto waves the sword at, changing it into nothing more than ash and engulfing the surrounding landscape in flames. Only powerful fighters such as Kyōraku and Ukitake can resist it, but even then only indirectly. Even in its Shikai, Ryūjin Jakka's power is enough to fight against two other captains' Shikai simultaneously. Unlike other Zanpakutō shown so far, resealing Ryūjin Jakka does not deactivate any ability already used against an opponent, as seen in Yamamoto's fight against Aizen.

Ryūjin Jakka's Jōkaku Enjō.
  • Jōkaku Enjō (城郭炎上, "Fortress Blaze"): this ability of Ryūjin Jakka creates a wall of flame that surrounds a target and then forms a huge contained sphere of flame in which to imprison enemies, it is also shown to be immensely powerful as it was capable of imprisoning Aizen, Tosen and Ichimaru for, according to Yamamoto a while.

  • Number One: Nadegiri (撫で斬り, "Clean Sweep" or "Killing Several with One Sword Sweep): this ability of Ryūjin Jakka creates a large turmoiling flame that possesses the characteristics of a physical blade cutting through solid objects and beings with ease.

Quotes

  • "Bansho Issai Kaijin to Nase, Ryujin Jakka!"
  • (To Shunsui Kyōraku): "My quarry never escapes. Come, you rascals. But you won't get off without a thrashing this time..."
  • (To Nanao Ise):"Listen well! Begone from here! I don't have time nor the patience to teach a mere infant like you how to breathe."

Trivia

  • In the anime, during the Amagai arc, Yamamoto saw Ichigo use his Vizard powers; yet he is still considered to be an ally of the Soul Society. It is unknown if he knows about his vizard powers in the manga, or what his opinion would be if he ever did find out about his vizard powers. However, because this was during a filler arc, it has no affect on the main plot. However, as the Vizard dilemma 100 years ago were judged by the Central 46, possibly manipulated by Aizen, it is possible that Yamamoto knows about the treachery (since he still communicates with Urahara) and possibly holds no ill feelings toward Vizards. With Central 46 dead, he no longer has to enforce their ruling and it is possible he does not consider the group exiled from Soul Society a century ago as enemies.
  • Ichigo calls Yamamoto "Gramps", as seen in the Amagai arc, while some of the other captains (Kyōraku, Komamura, Ukitake) use the honorifics.
  • Yamamoto has a habit of refering to those he faces in battle as "youngster", he also refers to a battle as a "beating" or "punishment." This more than likely has to do with the fact that he is older than most other characters and he has been in many battles.

Isshin Kurosaki (黒崎 一心, Kurosaki Isshin) is the biological father of Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu and as such, head of the Kurosaki family. He runs their private clinic, the Kurosaki Clinic. A skilled doctor, Isshin can perform almost any medical procedure except major surgery. Initially, Tite Kubo wanted to portray Isshin as a mortician, rather than a doctor, because Kubo thought Isshin looked better in a black suit.

Character outline

In the beginning of the series, Isshin is portrayed as a silly, fight-loving father who is "extremely over-energetic" and takes a keen interest in what his children are doing, but does it either offensively or with an all-too-happy tone, which elicits comical reactions from his kids, usually in the form of a kick. Because his kids choose to keep to themselves, he doesn't know what they are doing. Mainly Ichigo, but since he's a boy, Ichigo doesn't need to be watched over as much as his twin daughters. Isshin also seems to enjoy making fun of Ichigo and has a tendency to talk to the large memorial poster of his late wife Masaki, which he has pinned up in their kitchen, whenever he feels particularly emotional. Isshin is a big fan of Don Kanonji's TV show.

Despite his outrageous guise, however, Isshin can be serious and grim at times. On the date of Masaki's death, Isshin smokes a single cigarette in front of her grave, since she thought it made him look cool (she said it when they were dating). He reflects that it was the first and maybe the last time she ever complimented his appearance. He also told Ichigo that he shouldn't blame himself for his mother's death because she gave her life to protect him. In addition, during his confrontation with the Arrancar Grand Fisher and the subsequent chat with Kisuke Urahara, he remains completely serious (aside from a short argument between him and Kon about his parenting, and another, albeit short, between him and Urahara after the latter likens him to his son).

Isshin appears to be an associate of Kisuke Urahara and possesses knowledge of Sōsuke Aizen's alliance with the Menos. He mentions in his conversation with Urahara that he encountered Arrancar about ten years before the main storyline, though they were nowhere near as complete as Grand Fisher was. He also reveals to Kon that he has been aware of Ichigo's shinigami activities and Kon's substitutions since Grand Fisher's first attack. He also notes that he has never called Kon "Ichigo" while Kon is in Ichigo's body and that the traveling charm he gave to Ichigo before he went to rescue Rukia was actually for Kon (it's a protection talisman). This shows the sensitivity and propriety that he possesses of his role as Ichigo's father, which is rarely portrayed in the series.

Isshin also shares a relationship with Ryūken Ishida not unlike that of their sons. When Ryūken discovers his son is missing, Isshin pays him a visit and the two chat about their respective styles of parenting. It is then revealed that Ryūken was aware of Isshin's status, and he comments on Isshin's powers. The Bleach Official Animation Book VIBEs states that the two have some prior history together, and that they have been acquaintances for quite some time. It can also be noted they are both doctors: Isshin runs a clinic while Ryūken runs a hospital. It was hinted in volume 1 that the two cooperate on a professional level. After a major car accident, Isshin is overheard on the phone arguing with a hospital employee who is refusing to transfer the overload of patients. He says that the employee should tell his boss that Kurosaki needs a favor and then beds will open right up, then slams the phone down.

History

Little is known about Isshin's history, except that he was once a captain-level shinigami, though his division is currently unknown. Twenty years before the main storyline, he ceased being a shinigami, although it is unclear whether he officially quit his duties at that time or on an earlier date. His current shinigami uniform retains a captain's robe, but it has no visible division insignia and is worn like a sash over his left shoulder. After leaving the shinigami, Isshin lost most of his powers, and has only recently regained them. It is implied that he was more powerful and is still recovering. However, he was still powerful enough at this point to slay Grand Fisher, in his released Arrancar form, with a single strike of his sealed zanpakutō.

He married Masaki Kurosaki and they had three children: Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu. Masaki later died at the hands of Grand Fisher, who was a simple Hollow at the time, six years before the main storyline. Isshin was unable to prevent Masaki's death and blamed himself for it; later in the series however, he eventually kills Grand Fisher, both protecting Kon (inhabiting Ichigo's body) from attack and finally avenging his wife's death.

Synopsis

Agent of the Shinigami arc

Isshin plays the role character since early in the story, often attacking Ichigo or annoying his daughters. In the first episode it appears that he has no clue whats going on in Ichigo's life since he didn't know that more and more souls had been talking to Ichigo, something that Ichigo had told his sisters. Secretly, however, he has had complete knowledge of Ichigo's shinigami activities. He also knows about Kon, who takes Ichigo's place when he's gone, and never once has called Kon "Ichigo" while he's in his son's body.

Arrancar arc

Isshin as a shinigami

Isshin gives Ichigo a talisman, claiming it's a good luck charm originally given to him by Masaki, when really it was to protect Ichigo's body while Kon is in it. Isshin also has a brief fight with Grand Fisher, where he kills the Arrancar with a single cut from his sword, thereby avenging his wife's death. When Grand Fisher says that the size of a sword shows the amount of power someone may have, Isshin states that while it's true, captain-level shinigami know to compress it, otherwise all captains of the Soul Society would be swinging around swords the size of skyscrapers. Urahara then appears, and begins talking about Isshin's powers returning and how it is like to be a shinigami again after twenty years. He then proceeds to asks, in a more serious tone, if Isshin has had his revenge, to which Isshin replied that he never really held a grudge against Grand Fisher, but still held a regret that he was not there on that night so many years ago. They then talk about the Vizards' by Urahara questioning if he had noticed that they have contatcted him. The conversation goes on to be about the Arrancar and how the Grand Fisher was by far the most perfect they had seen at the moment and Sōsuke Aizen and his alliances questioning wheter or not the Vizards would take his side or not.

Later when the shinigami Rukia Kuchiki, a friend of Ichigo, needs a place to stay, she lies to Isshin, telling him a sad story about how she has lost everything and needs a place to stay, something both Isshin (seemingly) and Yuzu buys, crying, and resulting in Isshin screaming to the big poster of Masaki that they now have a third daughter.[1]

Hueco Mundo arc

When Ichigo leaves for Hueco Mundo, Isshin visits Ryūken at the hospital, commenting on what a horrible father Ryūken is and also accepting the fact that he himself is a horrible father. He was able to get into the underground training spot even though Ryūken mostly hid it. His old friend is genuinely surprised that Isshin has regained his powers, while Isshin notices that Ryūken still smokes despite being in a hospital.[2]

Powers & Abilities

When Isshin first appears in his shinigami uniform, he implies that he has abilities are at least on-par or greater to that of a Captain-level shinigami. This is further implied by the fact that he has a haori strapped to his left shoulder as a type of strap. It is unknown what the extent of Isshin's shinigami powers are (Zanjutsu, Kidō, Hakuda, and Hohō). However, while he hasn't yet regained his full power, he was powerful enough to bifurcate the imperfect-arrancar Grand Fisher before he realized it. Furthermore, the fact that Kisuke Urahara, a fellow former Shinigami captain, looked to Isshin as his superior implies that Isshin at full strength is a very powerful combatant.

Keen Intellect: While normally appearing goofy and oblivious in his daily life, Isshin has proven to be a highly intelligent man. He has repeatedly shown able to see the truth in any situation placed before him as he immediately realized Kon while in Ichigo's body was not Ichigo and was immediately aware of Ririn, Kurodo, Noba (in the anime), and Kisuke's presence. Isshin has also shown to be a very knowledgable as he already knew about the situation with Aizen and the Arrancar. He is also quite crafty as after discovering his son new status as a Shinigami, Isshin began making preparations to aid his son which including regaining his own Shinigami powers and protecting Ichigo's body with a kido spell.

Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant: As shown from his repeated comedic attacks on his son, Isshin is a very skilled fighter even when barehanded, further emphasized by how he personally played a part in training Ichigo. Although it would appear that Ichigo has long sinced surpassed Isshin from how Ichigo usually ends up beating his father. Though since its now known that he is at least a captain level shinigami he could be holding back, considering Ichigo initaly wasnt strong enough to fight shinigami captains.

Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Only seen fighting once and for a few seconds, Isshin's skill in swordsmanship despite being rusty allowed him to effortlessly slice through Grand Fisher's giant zanpakutō without losing any visible momentum and still cut down Grand Fisher in the process with only his sealed zanpakutō.

Vast Spiritual Energy: As a former Shinigami captain, Isshin possesses a considerable amount of spiritual energy. His spiritual energy is so great that even when not at full power, Ichigo and Shinji were able to sense its strong presence from miles away. As Isshin stated to Grand Fisher, every captain-level shinigami, including himself, must compress their spiritual energy through of their zanpakutō, otherwise, they would be swinging around swords the size of skyscrapers.

Kidō Expert: While it is unknown how well-versed he is in the art, Isshin has demonstrated capable skill in binding spells as shown from enchanting his lucky charm to protect Kon while in Ichigo's body with a barrier powerful enough to prevent a imperfect Arrancar with greater power than an average Gillian from attacking him.

Enhanced Endurance: Even without his Shinigami powers, Isshin appears to have the ability to take severe physical punishment, mostly done through fighting with Ichigo, getting kicked by Karin, and a close range shotgun blast caused by Renji when he was masquerading as a Police Officer.

Zanpakutō

The name of Isshin's zanpakutō has not yet been revealed. It has a red handle and hexagonal handguard. It is also hung from a string wrapped around his belt in an iaidō style, and worn with the edge down like a tachi instead of the edge up like a katana. The end of the hilt has a tassel similar to Ichigo's sealed form zanpakutō.

Masaki Kurosaki (黒崎 真咲, Kurosaki Masaki) was the mother of Ichigo Kurosaki who was killed trying to protect her son from Grand Fisher. She was a very loving mother and wife.

History

The Grand Fisher used the forms of humans whom he had devoured (mostly women) to attract other humans with high spiritual energy, and Ichigo, who at the time could not distinguish between ghosts and humans, saw Grand Fisher's lure and ran after it. Masaki, realizing this went after Ichigo and protected him from the Grand Fisher at the cost of her own life. According to Ichigo, Masaki was the center of the family and everything that went on with the family revolved around her. Due to this fact, Ichigo's family was greatly devastated by her loss.

Masaki caring for Ichigo when he was just a toddler.

They visit her grave every year, and that is the only day in the year Isshin smokes. The reason he smokes in front of her grave was because when they had first started dating, Masaki complimented him about how cool he looked while smoking. He also added that was the first and last time she complimented him about his appearance. Isshin hung up a large poster of her in his home, displaying the phrase "Mazaki forever".

According to Tatsuki Arisawa, Ichigo stopped crying every time he saw his mother. She claimed Ichigo had the most beautiful mother ever, and took it upon himself for her death. Isshin also thought it was his fault his wife died. He says this the reason being he couldn't get there in time to protect her from the Grand Fisher. When Ichigo asked him why nobody ever blamed him for his mother's death, Isshin explained to him that "he was the man the woman I fell in love with gave her life to save." He also added that when they meet each other again, if he had ever blamed Ichigo, Masaki wouldn't be able to forgive him.

Synopsis

Agent of the Shinigami Arc

When the Kurosaki family visited Masaki's grave, Grand Fisher returned as he could sense their high spiritual power. During the fight, when Ichigo began to lose, her memory upon being killed was released from Grand Fisher's lure, telling Ichigo her last thoughts before she died. All she could think about was how much fun they all had together, and for Ichigo to never stop smiling. Her spirit gave Ichigo the strength to nearly kill the hollow, forcing him to escape.

New Captain Amagai Arc

Masaki Kurosaki reappears in the The Kasumiōji filler Crisis when Ichigo Kurosaki faces off Hanza Nukui. Hanza Nukei uses his Bakkōtō, Saiga to look into Ichigo's memories, and then tortures him with the memories of the death of his mother. Hanza makes it so she tries to choke Ichigo, making it so Ichigo can't harm her or fight back. Before Ichigo chokes to death, the pleasant memories with his mother comes up from deep within him. A twister of reiastu surrounds them. Ichigo then tells his mother how much everybody misses her, and he manages even without. Before she vanishes, she smiles as telling Ichigo that everything is alright.

Karin Kurosaki (黒崎 夏梨, Kurosaki Karin) is the cynical and sarcastic daughter of Isshin Kurosaki. Compared to her soft-spoken twin-sister, Yuzu, Karin is the more authoritative of the two. She is an excellent soccer player with a kick powerful enough to hurt weak Hollow's. Karin's tough exterior results from her mother's death; because she could not be useful around the house like Yuzu, she resolved never to cry so that she would not burden her family with her personal troubles.

Karin is a sensible person and will not hesitate to kick her father in the head when she thinks he's acting unreasonable. She initially claims that she believes spirits do not exist, but she can see them just as well as her brother Ichigo can. She can also sense them from great distances, which usually manifests as a headache. In spite of her attitude about spirits, Karin is willing to use her abilities to earn a little cash, such as her position as Karakura Red of Don Kanonji's Karakura Superheroes.

In the beginning she got sick when connecting with Chad's bird, which had the soul of a young boy inside it. She was the first to realize that the bird was a boy who was dead and was being used by a Hollow to help it murder people. Ichigo says that it was the first time he had seen her cry since their mother had died.

Karin actually knows that Ichigo is a Shinigami and, of concern, wants to know why he's suffering. In the anime she also met Tōshirō Hitsugaya when he helped her at a soccer match and revealed himself as a shinigami. Karin is a homonym for Japanese quince, a name of a fruit, which matches Ichigo's name being a homonym for strawberry and Yuzu's name being a homonym for citron.

Spiritual Power: Not much is known about Karin, but she is able to at least see spirits like her brother Ichigo can (prior to him obtaining shinigami powers).

Strong Kick: As demonstrated in the anime, her kicks were strong enough to hurt weak hollows. Karin is also talented at soccer which would strengthen her physical power.

Yuzu Kurosaki (黒崎 遊子, Kurosaki Yuzu) is Karin's fraternal twin (both were born on May 6 of the same year), and more soft-spoken in comparison to her authoritative sibling. She is also the more empathetic of the two girls. She takes care of the housework, such as cooking meals and tidying up the living space, on a daily basis. She also regularly cuts Ichigo's hair.[2] She likes to play with Kon, calling him "Bostov", unaware of the fact that he is alive, which most often involves her dressing him in feminine clothes and gluing on unwanted accessories, much to his chagrin. Unlike her siblings, Yuzu is only able to see faint outlines of spirits. Both girls help out in the family's clinic. She is Karakura Yellow in Don Kanonji's Karakura Superheroes. She tends to get very upset whenever Ichigo disappears for any period longer than a day due to her brother complex for Ichigo. In episode 33 of the anime series, Yuzu finally sees a spirit clearly, which turns out to be a cat she named Raku that died and had formed an attachment to her thus becoming an obsessed spirit. For the short time they are together the cat protects Yuzu from hollows by creating a "force field" and later turning into a large burning lion which then defeats the hollows and then returns to its original form. A little while after the attack the cat disappears, its obsession being fulfilled. Yuzu is also the name of a citron.

Kon (コン, Kon) Ichigo's personal mod soul at the start of the series.. His name is short for Kaizō Konpaku (改造魂魄, modified soul). Kon originally wanted the name "Kai" ("Mod" in the official English dub) because it sounded cooler, but Ichigo Kurosaki decided his name was going to be Kon for that very reason. Kon is an artificial soul (modsoul) designed to inhabit Ichigo's body when Ichigo is in his Shinigami form; when not serving that purpose, Kon usually inhabits a lion plushie, which he calls his "sexy body".

Character Outline

Kon primarily serves as a comedic foil in the series; when not inhabiting Ichigo's body, his normal plushie body is treated with little respect and much disdain. His plushie body is the fake copy of the main character of the popular TV show, "Carnivore Kingdom" named "Ponkichi". It was a prize from the shooting game in the Karakura Town Festival. He is constantly stepped on and torn, at which point Ichigo will have Uryū Ishida repair the plushie. Uryū usually adds something unwanted or unnecessary when doing so, such as dressing Kon up like a designer doll. Uryū also sewed a Quincy cross on the back of Kon's head as revenge after Kon attacked Uryū for turning him into a doll. He is quite perverted and often takes advantage of his form to get girls to hug him to their chests. He likes Rukia a great deal, and calls her 'nee-san', or older sister. He also appears at the end of every episode during the Soul Society Arc, giving a short course on individual members of the Shinigami.

Kon is a notable pervert as seen in three episodes: the first of which is when he falls in love with Orihime Inoue simply due to her huge breasts; the second is when he is stepped on by Rukia and comments on the advantages of being a teddy bear because one eye could see under Rukia's skirt (Note: he has also done that to Rangiku Matsumoto); and when he wished to be appreciated he called Orihime's breasts the "land of the goddesses" ("valley of soft pillows" in the English Dub). He nearly loses his temper and attacks some students after hearing them talking about deleting a character on a video game and replacing it with a new one, something quite similar to his current situation, granted that Yuzu Kurosaki tends to dress him up in feminine clothing and calls him 'Bostov', he seems to genuinely care for her well being as seen when Yuzu was crying in her sleep due to Ichigo's disappearance (In actuality he was training with the Vizards) he had expressed his disgust due to Ichigo's apparent lack of care for his family.

Personality

Kon has a deep disgust for people who have absolutely no regard for what they create, living or otherwise. This is shown in the episode he first appears in, when he attacks three kids who disregard the deaths of their characters in a Gameboy game. He behaves like this because of his own death sentence from Soul Society. Kon claims that he is incapable of killing anything, so much so that he went out of his way to kick an already defeated hollow's falling corpse in another direction so it would not land on an ant hill, which would obviously crush/kill the ants. This kind act was the sole reason Ichigo decided to view Kon as a friend and requested Kisuke Urahara not to destroy him. Kon is also very perverted, as he is seen using Ichigo's body to please himself in chapter 182, and in many other chapters, is seen imagining/dreaming girls/women like Orihime and Rangiku fully naked, and sometimes together.

History

On the day of his birth, Kon was sentenced to death by the Soul Society as all the other mod souls. He was lucky to get with other products by mistake. After the fight with the Hollow, Kon tells Ichigo that he doesn't want to hurt anyone and that he considers himself equal with all humans.

Synopsis

Early story

Kon's first appearance is shortly after Rukia Kuchiki and Ichigo obtain a like item known as gikongan (Soul Candy) from the Urahara Shop, which are candy-like orbs stored in dispensers similar to those Pez come in. The Soul Candy, when ingested, forces Ichigo's soul out of his body and replaces it with an artificial, pre-programmed soul, allowing Ichigo to transform if Rukia is not around.

Unbeknownst to everyone (including the Urahara Shop's employees), the particular Soul Candy dispenser Urahara gives Rukia had been declared defective by Soul Society, as it was made from a batch meant to be turned in for destruction. These pills contained mod souls, artificially created souls designed to combat Hollows. Additionally, these souls have personalities, unlike the common artificial souls. Each modified soul was designed to have their own special strengths; in Kon's case, his legs. Upon first testing the item, Ichigo and Rukia leave it to its own devices while they go to fight a Hollow.

The mod soul, now free and having no desire to return to its pill form, goes on a mischievous and damaging (to Ichigo's reputation) rampage, diverting Ichigo from the pursuit of a particularly dangerous Hollow. The pair clash a few times during the course of the mod soul's spree, and would have continued had not the Hollow chosen to appear and attack a group of children nearby. The mod soul acts on its instincts, attacking the Hollow and giving Ichigo the time to defeat it.

Afterwards, Ichigo has a talk with the mod soul, who explains that he just wants to be free and experience life, similar to that of a real soul. Taking pity on him, Rukia and Ichigo ignore the standing directive to destroy all mod souls; they instead stick the mod soul into a lion plushie, giving it life. Ichigo gives the mod soul the name of Kon shortly thereafter, despite Kon's protests.

After this point, Ichigo uses Kon in the same manner as regular Soul Candy. When Uryū Ishida challenges Ichigo to a duel, the winner being decided by who could kill the most Hollows, Kon is given charge of Ichigo's body. He joins in the fight around Karakura to defeat Hollows, saving an ambushed Rukia. He later watches as Ichigo and Uryū team up to defeat a Menos Grande.

Soul Society arc

When Rukia decides to leave Karakura in order to protect Ichigo, Kon tries to stop her, but she ties him to the Kurosaki's toilet and gags him. When Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, and Uryū decide to go after Rukia, Kon tries to join them in Ichigo's body, but Ichigo makes him stay behind.

In the meantime, Kon is recruited by Don Kanonji as Karakura King in his Karakura Superheroes team. He serves as a soccer ball for Karin's special attack, the Karin Impact Kick.

Bount arc

After the beginning of the Bount Arc in the anime, Kon meets his fellow modified souls, Ririn, Kurōdo and Noba. He does not get along well with his new companions. Ririn views him as a fool and they often fight, and Kon is jealous of Kurōdo's assignment to guard Orihime. They do work together, however, most notably in episode 80, where they collaborate in the construction of several elaborate, yet useless, anti-doll traps.

When the Bounts infiltrate Soul Society, Kon joins Ichigo and the others to find them (partly due to fear of falling victim to Don Kanonji if he stayed behind in the real world again). Kon gets separated from the group in Rukongai and settles temporarily with a woman who owns a coffee shop. In contrast to Kon's usual lack of luck with women, this woman takes a shine to him. He eventually leaves to help fight the Bount, but continually arrives after the battles. After meeting up with everyone again (which is depicted during the non-sequitor previews for the next episodes), Kon brags about his stay with the woman, only to find out from Jūshirō Ukitake that it was actually a cross-dressing man.

Arrancar arc

With the Arrancar invasion beginning, Kon takes over Ichigo's body to have a little fun on the town, only to run into Grand Fisher. He is saved by the timely re-emergence of Isshin Kurosaki, Ichigo's father, as a Shinigami. Isshin quickly dispatches Grand Fisher with ease and Kon is forced to keep Isshin's true identity secret. Isshin reveals that he knew about Kon ever since meeting him during Grand Fisher's first attack at the graveyard.

Hueco Mundo arc

While Ichigo is off fighting in Hueco Mundo, Urahara makes Kon an offer to make him into a super hero to fight the Hollows in Karakura Town. Kon initially refuses, but jumps at the chance when Kisuke mentions he could become a 'babe magnet'. After the destruction of the Hollows fortress, Kon soon falls asleep as Urahara's plans are completed for the final showdown in Karakura Town.

Powers & Abilities

During the few times that Kon is in combat, he has proven to be able to hold his own — in addition to possessing all the combat abilities of Ichigo's well-trained body, he was designed to have exceptionally powerful leg strength. He was able to fend Ichigo off in combat by using just kick-attacks and leg-blocks, and is able to kick aside massive Hollows. He can run 100 meters in 3.8 seconds while in his plushie form. When in Ichigo's body, he is capable of jumping over 13 meters and 56 cm from standing position.
